The purpose of university education has long been a topic of debate. While some believe that universities should focus solely on career-oriented courses, others argue that higher education should also emphasize intellectual development. Those in favor of career-focused education argue that universities should equip students with the skills necessary for the job market. Given the rising cost of education, students expect a return on their investment by securing well-paying jobs. Additionally, industries require specialized knowledge, and universities should align their curricula with market demands. However, others argue that education should not be purely vocational. Universities should also encourage critical thinking, creativity, and a broad understanding of the world. Subjects such as philosophy, literature, and history contribute to personal growth and social awareness, which are equally important in shaping well-rounded individuals. In my view, a balanced approach is necessary. While universities should provide career-oriented courses, they should also offer subjects that promote critical thinking and lifelong learning. This ensures that students are not only job-ready but also capable of adapting to an ever-changing world.
