Some people say that the main environment problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environment problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

A number of people argue that the key environmental issue in modern times is the disappearance of flora and fauna. While this argument is understandable to some extent, I would argue that other issues are more concerning.

There are convincing reasons why some opine that plant and animal loss is the most pressing problem. Firstly, some species are fundamental for agriculture. This is because a third of global crops depend on pollinators such as butterflies or bees, so the rapid vanishing of these species may wreak havoc on the quantity and quality of food production, which may result in food shortage. Secondly, a species extinction may lead to the extinction of other creatures. The reason is that each species works together in ecosystems to maintain balance and support life. When Chile sandalwood went extinct in the early 20th century, for instance, ecological imbalance occurred, causing a reduction in the number of various insect and bird species that depended on it for food shelter

However, I would argue that there are other environmental problems that require immediate attention. One of these is global warming, which is the primary cause for terrible natural disasters. As temperature rises, extreme weather events, namely heat waves or cyclones, and disasters, such as floods or droughts, also occur more frequently. These catastrophic events can result in potential loss of lives, affecting generation after generation. Another more pressing problem than the disappearance of plants and animals is pollution, due to its direct effects on human health. If air pollution may result in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, noise pollution can cause sleeping disorders, and anxiety. While biodiversity loss is certainly a significant environmental problem, its impacts may be more difficult to see in the short-term and may not have immediate effects on human well-being.

In conclusion, although both views are valid to some extent, I still opine that we should focus our attention on alleviating global warming and pollution.
